Dr. Donna Heaney


Dr Heaney grew up in North Philadelphia and always dreamed of being a vet. After completing her undergraduate degree in Animal Science at the University of New Hampshire, she received her veterinary degree from the University of Minnesota, in 1992. In 2005, she purchased the North Shore Veterinary Hospital from Dr. Letendre.  

Her special interests in veterinary medicine include acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutritional therapy and preventive medicine. Dr. Heaney has lived in Gloucester since 1994 and would never live anywhere else. When she is not at the office, she enjoys spending her free time baking, gardening and knitting. She lives in Gloucester with her husband, 2 children, 1 dog, 1 cat and 22 chickens.

Dr. Lee Powell

Dr. Powell grew up on the North Shore of Massachusetts and earned an engineering degree from Northeastern University. He worked in research at Brigham and Womens Hospital for several years before attending veterinary school at Tufts University. After receiving his veterinary degree, Dr. Powell worked briefly in the North Andover area before coming to Cape Ann. He joined the North Shore Vet Hospital in 2014. His hobbies include rollerblading, kayaking, and landscaping.

Dr. Leonard Letendre

Dr. Leonard J. Letendre graduated from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1972.  Prior to that he received a double BS in Zoology & Chemistry from St. Francis College & a MS in biochemistry from the University of NH. 

In 1973 Dr. Letendre purchased the North Shore Veterinary Hospital from Dr. Osman Babson who was a second-generation veterinarian. 

Dr. Letendre was the first president of the North Shore Veterinary Association whose primary goal was to provide financial assistance to up & coming veterinarians who have aspirations of practicing on the North Shore.

Dr. Letendre was a member of the Gloucester Board of Health for 10 years and served as its chairman for six years. Dr. L was also employed as a veterinarian by the Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health, Division of Food & Drugs.  He was influential in investigating many cases of food borne illness outbreaks throughout the state. Dr. L was the city Veterinarian for over 30 years primarily involved in the control of rabies in both wild & domestic animals. 

Dr. Letendre’s interest in Veterinary medicine includes ophthalmology, dermatology & preventive medicine. Doc continues to work at the NSVH with both Dr. Heaney & Dr. Powell and continues to pursue several courses in veterinary continuing education.
